Danish Housing Allowance (Boligstøtte) Calculator

Boligstøtte is a government subsidy available to tenants in Denmark who meet certain income and housing criteria. It is administered by Udbetaling Danmark and can significantly reduce your monthly housing costs. The allowance amount depends on your household income, the size of your rent, your apartment's floor area and whether you have children.

How Boligstøtte Is Calculated

The calculation starts with your annual rent, capped at a statutory maximum. A base allowance of 60% of the approved rent is then reduced depending on how much your household income exceeds a threshold (the gratis beløb). Families with children receive a higher income threshold, meaning they qualify for more support. The final monthly amount is also subject to a cap.

Important Considerations

This calculator provides a simplified estimate. The actual amount may differ because Udbetaling Danmark applies additional rules regarding household size, heating costs and wealth. Always verify your eligibility and expected payment through borger.dk or your local citizen service centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

How low must your income be to receive housing allowance?

You must always pay at least 11% of household income yourself, with a minimum of 21,300 kr. If there is more than one child in the household, the income threshold is increased by 53,100 kr.

Does housing allowance depend on rent?

Whether and how much housing allowance you can receive depends on: household income and assets, the number of children and adults living in the home, the amount of rent, and the size of the home.

What counts as income?

A-income is not just basic salary (or student grants or unemployment benefits), but also includes commission, fees, holiday pay and free board and lodging. SKAT defines A-income as "all forms of monetary remuneration for personal work in an employment relationship."

How does income affect housing allowance?

Your housing allowance is recalculated every month if your income rises or falls by more than 800 kr and the calculated allowance simultaneously rises or falls by more than 200 kr. To avoid this, it is a good idea to notify Udbetaling Danmark that your income has permanently changed.
