Gross to Net Conversion in Denmark

When you receive a job offer or negotiate your salary in Denmark, the figure discussed is almost always the gross amount. However, what matters most is the net amount โ€” what actually lands in your bank account. This calculator helps you quickly convert between the two.

What Gets Deducted?

Two main deductions reduce your gross pay. The AM-bidrag at 8% is deducted first from the full gross amount. Then income tax is calculated on the remainder after subtracting your personal allowance (personfradrag), approximately 49,700 kr per year or about 4,141 kr per month.

Effective Tax Rate

The effective tax rate represents the true percentage of your gross income going to AM-bidrag and income tax combined. Because of the personal allowance, your effective rate is always lower than the combined rate.

Practical Example

With a gross salary of 45,000 kr, first 8% AM (3,600 kr) is deducted, leaving 41,400 kr. Then the personal allowance (4,141 kr) is subtracted, and tax is calculated on the remaining 37,259 kr.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my net salary?

First, 8% AM contribution is deducted. Then the personal allowance is subtracted, and your tax rate is applied to the rest. The personal allowance is then added back โ€” the result is your net salary.

Who earns 50,000 per month?

The 40,000โ€“50,000 kr group includes train driver, psychologist, librarian, teacher, midwife, nurse, police officer, and bricklayer โ€” 22 jobs in total.

What is the 8,000 kr rule?

If you pay amounts exceeding 8,000 kr including VAT in cash without notifying the tax agency, you cannot deduct the expense. The rule combats undeclared work.
