SU โ€” Danish Student Grant

SU (Statens Uddannelsesstรธtte) is the Danish government's financial support for students in higher education. The grant is available to Danish citizens and certain international students enrolled in approved educational programs. The amount you receive depends on whether you live with your parents or independently. For 2025, students living away from home receive approximately 6,397 kr per month before tax, while those living at home receive approximately 3,355 kr per month.

Earnings Threshold (Fribelรธb)

While receiving SU, you are allowed to earn up to a certain amount without affecting your grant โ€” this is called the fribelรธb. For 2025, the monthly earnings threshold is approximately 15,500 kr (before AM-bidrag). If you earn more than this, you may have to repay some or all of your SU for those months. The threshold applies per month, and there is also an annual adjustment so that earning less in some months can compensate for earning more in others.

Duration and Tax

You can receive SU for up to 70 monthly installments (klip), which typically covers 5 years and 10 months of study. SU is taxable income, so the actual amount you receive after tax is lower than the gross amount. Most students pay around 37% in tax on their SU.
