Child Support (Børnebidrag) in Denmark
In Denmark, the parent who does not live with the child is typically required to pay child support (børnebidrag). The base amount is called normalbidraget, which for 2026 is 1,675 kr per month per child. This amount is set annually by the government and adjusted for inflation. The support is paid until the child turns 18.
Standard and supplementary contributions
The normalbidrag consists of a basic amount plus a potential supplementary contribution (tillægsbidrag) depending on the paying parent's income. If the paying parent's income exceeds certain thresholds, Familieretshuset (the Family Law House) may set an increased contribution. The total can be several times the standard amount for high-income parents.
How child support works
Child support is typically agreed upon between the parents or determined by Familieretshuset. If the parents cannot agree, the authorities can set the amount based on the paying parent's income. The support is not tax-deductible for the payer and not taxable income for the receiver.
Child support with shared custody
With a 7-7 arrangement (the child stays 7 days with each parent), the paying parent typically does not need to pay child support, as both parents are considered to fulfil their maintenance obligation. Use this calculator to estimate monthly and annual child support obligations.
