Social Assistance Calculator 2026
Kontanthjælp is the Danish social safety net for residents who cannot support themselves through employment or other means. The benefit is administered by municipalities and serves as a last resort for people who have exhausted other options such as unemployment benefits (dagpenge). The amount depends on your age, whether you have children, and your marital status. This calculation is for guidance only and does not constitute an official decision. Use our calculator to estimate your expected kontanthjælp payout.
What are the kontanthjælp rates for 2026?
Rates for 2026 range from approximately 7,614 kr. for those under 30 without dependents to 15,874 kr. for providers over 30. The base rate for adults over 30 without children is approximately 12,352 kr. before tax. Single providers can receive additional child supplements of approximately 1,600-2,800 kr. Residents under 30 living at home receive approximately 2,900-3,000 kr. Rates apply from 1 January 2026.
What are the requirements for kontanthjælp?
To qualify, you must be a Danish resident, unable to support yourself, and willing to participate in activation programs such as job training, education, or internships arranged by the municipality. Your assets must generally not exceed 16,800 kr. (single) or 33,600 kr. (cohabiting). For the full rate, you must typically have lived in Denmark for 9 out of the last 10 years (residency requirement).
How much can you receive in kontanthjælp?
The calculator shows your total monthly income based on your kontanthjælp calculation. Kontanthjælp is subject to AM-bidrag (8%) and income tax. Work income is offset but there is a free allowance (fribeløb) making it worthwhile to work. The limit for the minimum and base rate is 18,735 kr. Additional supplements such as housing benefits (boligstøtte) may also be available but are not included here. Contact your municipality or use the official calculator at Borger.dk for a precise calculation.
When are you eligible for kontanthjælp?
You are eligible if you have experienced a social event (e.g. job loss, illness, or divorce), cannot support yourself, and your spouse also cannot support you. You must be available for the labor market and actively participate in programs from the municipal job center. Note that from 1 July 2025, many benefits are consolidated under joint kontanthjælp rules.
Can you own a car while on kontanthjælp?
It is possible to own a car while receiving kontanthjælp, but the car's value may affect your assets, which generally must not exceed 16,800 kr. for single persons. The municipality evaluates each case individually. Exceptions may be made if the car is necessary for transport to work or education.
