BMI Calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used measure that relates your weight to your height. It provides a quick indication of whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. While BMI does not directly measure body fat, it is a useful screening tool endorsed by health authorities worldwide, including the Danish Health Authority (Sundhedsstyrelsen).

How BMI Is Calculated

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight. Values below 18.5 indicate underweight, 25โ€“29.9 indicate overweight, and 30 or above indicate obesity. These thresholds are the same for men and women.

Limitations of BMI

BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass, so very muscular people may have a high BMI without being overweight. It is best used as a starting point alongside other health indicators such as waist circumference, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a normal BMI for 65-year-olds?

When it comes to BMI and older adults, BMI for women over 65 and men over 65 may be between 25-29, which is defined as overweight on the BMI scale. The reason is that a slightly higher BMI can be beneficial for older people if they need to fight a serious illness.

What weight suits my height?

BMI is calculated based on height and weight. To find your BMI, multiply your height in metres by your height in metres and divide your weight in kg by that number. For example, if you weigh 70 kg and are 1.75 metres tall, the calculation is: 70 kg / (1.75 m x 1.75 m) = 22.86. That gives a BMI of 22.86.

When is a woman considered overweight?

Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9. Obese: BMI between 30 and 39.9. Severely obese: BMI over 40.

Can you get Wegovy with a BMI of 26?

The Danish Health Authority approved Wegovy treatment as of March 2023 if you have a BMI of at least 30, or a BMI between 27-30 with at least one risk factor such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease.
