Calculate your aquarium volume

Knowing your aquarium's exact volume is important for correct dosing of medication, fertiliser and water treatment, and for determining how many fish you can keep. This calculator gives you both gross and net volume.

Gross vs. net volume

Gross volume is the total space calculated from outer dimensions. Net volume is the actual water amount after accounting for gravel, decorations, filter and similar โ€“ typically about 90% of gross volume. Net volume is the number you should use for dosing medication and chemicals.

How to measure correctly

Measure the aquarium internally for the most accurate result. Glass thickness can vary from 4-12 mm depending on size. For a standard aquarium with 6 mm glass, the difference is about 1.2 cm in each direction. If you measure externally, gross volume will be slightly too high.

Typical aquarium sizes

A beginner aquarium is typically 54-112 litres (60x30x30 cm to 80x35x40 cm). Medium aquariums are 112-240 litres, and large aquariums are 240+ litres. The larger the aquarium, the more stable the water environment and the easier it is to maintain good water values.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is net volume lower than gross volume?

Net volume is lower because gravel, rocks, decorations, plants, filter and heater take up space in the aquarium and displace water. Typically these elements occupy about 10% of total volume. With lots of gravel and large decorations it can be even more โ€“ up to 15-20%.

What aquarium size is recommended for beginners?

For beginners, an aquarium of at least 54-112 litres is recommended (e.g. 60x30x30 cm). Larger aquariums are actually easier to maintain because the water environment is more stable. A 100-litre aquarium is a good compromise between size and maintenance. Avoid very small aquariums under 30 litres as they require more frequent maintenance.

Should I measure the aquarium internally or externally?

For the most accurate result, measure internally. Glass thickness varies from 4 mm on small aquariums to 12+ mm on large ones. For a typical 80 cm aquarium with 6 mm glass, the internal width is about 1.2 cm less than external. If you only have external measurements, the calculator still gives a good estimate.
