Dog years to human years โ€“ how old is my dog?

Many dog owners know the old rule of multiplying the dog's age by 7 to get human years. But this method is actually quite inaccurate. Dogs mature much faster than humans in their first years, and the ageing rate depends largely on the dog's size and breed. Our calculator takes both age and breed size into account to give you a more accurate picture of your dog's biological age.

How dog years are correctly calculated

The modern method of calculating dog years starts from the fact that the first year of life equals about 15 human years, as the dog goes through intense physical and mental development during this period. The second year equals about 9 human years. After that, ageing depends on the dog's size: small dogs (under 10 kg) age at about 4 human years per dog year, medium dogs (10-25 kg) at about 5 human years, and large dogs (over 25 kg) at about 6 human years per year.

Why do large dogs age faster?

Large dog breeds like Great Danes, St. Bernards and Bernese Mountain Dogs unfortunately have a shorter life expectancy than small breeds. Research suggests that large dogs grow faster, which puts more strain on the body and can accelerate ageing at the cellular level. A small dog like a Chihuahua can live up to 15-20 years, while a Great Dane typically only lives 6-8 years. Medium dogs fall somewhere in between with an average lifespan of 10-13 years.

Signs of ageing in dogs

Regardless of breed, your dog will show signs of ageing over time. Typical signs include greying around the muzzle, reduced activity levels, joint stiffness, changes in appetite, and declining vision or hearing. When your dog reaches senior age โ€“ typically from 7 years for large breeds and 10 years for small breeds โ€“ you should consider more frequent vet visits and adjust diet and exercise to your dog's needs.

Extend your dog's lifespan

You can help your dog live a long and healthy life by ensuring regular exercise, a balanced diet suited to the dog's age and size, regular vet checkups and good dental care. Obesity is one of the biggest risk factors for dogs and can shorten lifespan by up to 2 years. Keep your dog in good shape and enjoy many good years together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is my dog in human years?

It depends on the dog's age and size. The first year equals about 15 human years, the second about 9, and then 4-6 human years per dog year depending on breed size. A 5-year-old medium dog equals about 39 human years.

When is a dog considered senior?

It depends on the breed size. Large dogs (over 25 kg) are considered senior from about 6-7 years, medium dogs from about 8-9 years, and small dogs from about 10-11 years. Senior dogs need adapted nutrition, gentler exercise and more frequent vet visits.

Do mixed breed dogs live longer than purebred dogs?

Generally yes. Mixed breed dogs have a wider gene pool, which reduces the risk of hereditary diseases. Studies show that mixed breeds live on average 1-2 years longer than purebreds of the same size. However, the most important factor for lifespan is the dog's size, not whether it is purebred or mixed.
