Find the right horse for you

Choosing the right horse size is important for both rider comfort and horse welfare. This calculator helps you find the recommended wither height and minimum horse weight based on your own height and weight.

Wither height and rider height

As a rule of thumb, the horse's wither height should be between 95% and 105% of the rider's height. A 170 cm rider thus fits best on a horse with a wither height of about 162-179 cm. Too short a horse gives poor balance, while too large a horse can be difficult to control.

Weight ratio โ€“ the most important factor

Researchers recommend that the rider's weight (including equipment) should not exceed 15-20% of the horse's weight. A 70 kg rider should therefore ride a horse weighing at least 350 kg. Excess weight causes back and joint problems and reduces performance and welfare.

Other factors to consider

Beyond height and weight, consider the horse's build, breed, age and training level. A compact, muscular horse can carry more than a long, slender horse of the same height. Icelandic horses, for example, are relatively small but extremely strong for their size.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can a horse carry?

Research shows a horse should ideally not carry more than 15-20% of its own body weight, including saddle and equipment. A 500 kg horse can thus carry 75-100 kg total. Above 20% the risk of back, joint and tendon injuries increases significantly. The horse's build, fitness and training level also play a role.

Is an Icelandic horse suitable for tall riders?

Icelandic horses typically stand 125-145 cm at the withers but are extremely strong and compact. They can often carry relatively heavier riders than their size suggests. However, it is still recommended that rider weight does not exceed 20% of horse weight. A 350 kg Icelandic horse can carry up to 70 kg rider including equipment.

Does saddle and equipment count in the weight?

Yes, the recommended 15-20% weight limit includes all equipment โ€“ saddle, bridle, saddlebags etc. A typical saddle weighs 5-10 kg, and with other equipment the total can reach 10-15 kg. So a 70 kg rider with equipment loads the horse with about 80-85 kg.
