Calorie needs for cats
Our calculator uses the recognized RER formula (Resting Energy Requirement) to calculate your cat's daily calorie needs. RER is calculated as 70 ร weight^0.75 and then adjusted for activity level and neutering status.
What is RER?
RER stands for Resting Energy Requirement and is the energy a cat burns at rest. It's the basis for calculating total daily energy needs. An average adult cat weighing 4 kg has a RER of about 198 kcal. The actual calorie need is adjusted with factors for activity and whether the cat is neutered.
Neutered cats have lower calorie needs
Neutered cats typically have about 15% lower calorie needs than unneutered cats because hormonal changes lower the metabolism. It's important to adjust food amounts after neutering to avoid obesity, which can lead to diabetes, joint problems and other health issues.
Activity level and calories
A sedentary indoor cat needs fewer calories than an active outdoor cat. Low activity uses about RER ร 1.0, normal activity about RER ร 1.2 and high activity about RER ร 1.4. Adjust the amount according to your cat's actual activity pattern.
