Cat years to human years calculator
Our calculator converts your cat's age to human years so you can better understand where your cat is in its life cycle. Many believe you simply multiply by 7, but this is an outdated myth. Cats don't age evenly โ they age very quickly at first and then more slowly.
How are cat years calculated?
The first year of life equals about 15 human years, because kittens develop extremely quickly and are nearly adult by age 1. The second year equals an additional 9 human years, so a 2-year-old cat is about 24 in human years. After that, each additional cat year equals about 4 human years. A 10-year-old cat is therefore about 56 in human years.
Cat life stages
Cats go through several life stages: kitten (0-6 months), junior (7 months โ 2 years), adult (3-6 years), mature (7-10 years), senior (11-14 years) and geriatric (15+ years). Each stage has its own needs for nutrition, exercise and vet visits. Knowing your cat's age in human years helps you adapt care accordingly.
Indoor vs. outdoor cats
Indoor cats typically live 12-18 years, while outdoor cats average 10-14 years due to risks like traffic, predators and diseases. Whether your cat lives indoors or outdoors, regular vet visits are important โ especially for older cats over 7 years.
Tips for a long and healthy cat life
Good nutrition, regular exercise through play, clean drinking water and annual vet checkups are key to a long cat life. Neutered cats statistically live longer than unneutered ones. Keep your cat at a healthy weight and provide mental stimulation with toys and climbing opportunities.
