Dog Water Needs โ€“ How Much Water Should My Dog Drink?

Water is essential for your dog's health, and it is important to ensure they always have access to fresh, clean water. Our calculator helps you estimate how much water your dog should drink daily based on weight, activity level and weather conditions.

Basic water needs

As a rule of thumb, a dog should drink about 50 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. This means a 10 kg dog should drink about 500 ml (0.5 litres) per day, while a 30 kg dog should drink about 1.5 litres. However, this is only a starting point โ€“ actual needs vary.

Activity level and water needs

Dogs that are very active need significantly more water than dogs with low activity levels. A dog that exercises intensely or goes on long walks may need up to 50% more water than normal. Always bring water on long walks and give the dog frequent opportunities to drink.

Weather and temperature

In hot weather, a dog's water needs increase significantly. Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting, which evaporates water from the lungs. In hot periods, water needs can increase by up to 50%. Make sure the water bowl is always full and consider placing multiple water bowls around the home and garden.

Signs of dehydration

Watch for signs of dehydration: dry gums, sunken eyes, reduced skin elasticity (test by pulling the scruff โ€“ it should snap back quickly), lethargy and reduced appetite. Contact your vet immediately if you suspect serious dehydration.

When to contact the vet

Contact your vet if your dog suddenly drinks much more or much less than usual. Increased thirst can be a sign of diabetes, kidney problems or other diseases. Decreased water intake can indicate illness or pain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water should a dog drink per day?

A dog should drink about 50 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day under normal conditions. A 20 kg dog should therefore drink about 1 litre per day. In hot weather or with high activity, the need can increase by 50-100%. Puppies and nursing females often have higher water needs.

What happens if my dog drinks too little water?

Dehydration can be serious for dogs. Even mild dehydration can lead to reduced energy, dry gums and concentrated urine. Severe dehydration can lead to organ damage, kidney failure and in the worst case can be life-threatening. Always ensure fresh water is available, and contact the vet if your dog refuses to drink.

Can my dog drink too much water?

Yes, excessive water intake (polydipsia) can be a sign of underlying conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing's syndrome or adrenal insufficiency. Water intoxication is rare but can occur if the dog drinks extremely large amounts of water in a short time, e.g. during water play. Contact your vet if your dog suddenly starts drinking significantly more than usual.

Should I give my dog cold or warm water?

Most dogs prefer water at room temperature or slightly cooled. Ice water is not dangerous but may cause some dogs to drink too quickly. In hot weather, slightly cooler water can help cool the dog down. Avoid giving very cold water to an overheated dog, as it can cause stomach cramps. The most important thing is that the water is fresh and clean.
