Dog calorie calculator โ how many calories does my dog need?
Knowing your dog's daily calorie needs is crucial for keeping it in good shape and preventing obesity. Like humans, dogs have individual calorie needs that depend on several factors. Our calculator uses the recognised RER formula (Resting Energy Requirement) to give you a precise estimate of your dog's daily energy needs.
What is the RER formula?
RER (Resting Energy Requirement) is calculated as 70 times the dog's weight in kilograms raised to the power of 0.75. This value indicates the basal energy need โ the energy the dog needs just to maintain basic body functions at rest. The total daily need is then calculated by multiplying RER by an activity factor that reflects the dog's lifestyle and activity level.
Activity level and energy needs
A dog with low activity level, such as an older dog that mostly sleeps and takes short walks, needs a factor of about 1.2. A normally active dog that gets daily walks and moderate exercise uses a factor of about 1.6. Very active dogs like hunting dogs or agility dogs may need a factor of 2.0, while extreme working dogs like sled dogs may need up to 3 times RER.
Neutered dogs
Neutered dogs typically have a lower metabolism than intact dogs. Research shows that neutering can reduce energy needs by about 15%. It is important to adjust food portions after neutering to avoid weight gain. Many dog owners find that their dog gains weight after neutering precisely because the food amount is not adjusted to the new lower energy needs.
Obesity in dogs
Obesity is a growing problem among dogs and can lead to serious health issues such as diabetes, joint problems, heart disease and shorter lifespan. Studies show that a dog at ideal weight can live up to 2 years longer than an overweight dog. Use our calculator as a starting point and adjust to your dog's individual needs in consultation with your vet.
