Dog ideal weight โ what should a healthy dog weigh?
Knowing your dog's ideal weight is important for ensuring a healthy and long life. Obesity is one of the most common health problems in dogs and can lead to a range of serious conditions. Our calculator gives you an estimate of your dog's ideal weight based on breed and gender, providing a good starting point for assessing whether your dog is in good shape.
Ideal weight varies by breed and gender
Different dog breeds have vastly different ideal weights. A Chihuahua typically weighs 1.5-3 kg, while a Bernese Mountain Dog can weigh 40-50 kg โ both can be in perfect shape at these weights. Within the same breed, males are typically about 10% heavier than females. Our calculator covers 8 of the most popular dog breeds and adjusts for gender.
How to assess your dog's weight
In addition to using the calculator, you can do a simple body check at home. You should be able to easily feel the dog's ribs without pressing hard. Viewed from above, the dog should have a visible waist behind the ribs. From the side, the belly should tuck up after the ribcage. If the ribs are hard to feel or the dog lacks a waist, it may be overweight.
Consequences of overweight
An overweight dog has increased risk of diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, breathing problems and certain cancers. Studies show that dogs at ideal weight live up to 2 years longer than overweight dogs. Especially for brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs, extra weight can significantly worsen already existing breathing problems.
What if my dog is over- or underweight?
If your dog weighs more than the recommended range, you should gradually reduce food amounts and increase exercise. A weight loss plan should always be made in cooperation with your vet. If your dog is underweight, it could be due to too little food, parasites or an underlying illness โ contact your vet for an examination. Sudden weight changes should always be investigated by a vet.
