Calculate your swim pace

Swim pace is the time it takes to swim 100 metres. It is the most common measure of swim speed and is used for training planning and competition goals.

Pace per 100m

Pace is calculated by dividing total time by the number of 100m segments. If you swim 400m in 8 minutes, your pace is 2:00 min/100m. A good pace for recreational swimmers is 1:45-2:30 min/100m for front crawl. Elite swimmers are under 1:00 min/100m.

Speed in km/h

A recreational swimmer typically swims 2-3 km/h, while elite swimmers can reach 7-8 km/h in sprint.

Improving pace

Focus on technique, endurance and interval training. Regular swimming 2-3 times per week can significantly improve pace over 2-3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good swim pace?

For recreational swimmers, 1:45-2:30 min/100m is a good front crawl pace. Beginners are typically 2:30-3:30. Competitive swimmers are under 1:30, elite under 1:00 min/100m.

Which swimming stroke is fastest?

Front crawl (freestyle) is the fastest stroke, followed by butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke. Crawl is about 10-15% faster than butterfly and 20-30% faster than breaststroke.

How many calories does swimming burn?

Swimming burns about 400-700 calories per hour depending on intensity, stroke and weight. Moderate crawl burns about 500 kcal/hour for a 75 kg person. Butterfly burns most, breaststroke least.
