Liters to Grams Converter

Convert liters to grams and kilograms for common kitchen ingredients. Since liters measure volume and grams measure weight, the conversion depends on ingredient density.

Density for common ingredients

1 liter water = 1,000 g. 1 liter milk = about 1,030 g. 1 liter oil = about 920 g. 1 liter flour = about 600 g.

Why does weight vary?

Different ingredients have different densities. Water is the reference at 1 g/ml. Heavier ingredients like milk weigh more per liter, while lighter ones like oil and flour weigh less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 1 liter of water always weigh 1 kg?

Almost. 1 liter of pure water at 4ยฐC weighs exactly 1 kg. At room temperature (20ยฐC) it weighs about 998 g โ€“ a negligible difference in the kitchen.

Why is oil lighter than water?

Oil is lighter than water because oil molecules are larger and pack less densely than water molecules. That's also why oil floats on water. 1 liter of oil weighs about 920 g, while 1 liter of water weighs 1,000 g.

Can I use the calculator for all liquids?

The calculator covers the four most common ingredients. For other liquids, use water as an approximation for thin liquids (juice, vinegar) and oil for fatty liquids. Honey weighs about 1,420 g/l, and syrup about 1,380 g/l.
