Common widths are 10 cm, 12.5 cm, 14.5 cm, 15 cm and 20 cm. Deck boards are typically 14.5 cm wide. Wider boards mean fewer per m².
Boards come in standard lengths: 2.4 m, 3.0 m, 3.6 m, 4.2 m, 4.8 m and 5.4 m. Choose the length that minimises waste.
It depends on board width. 10 cm boards: 10 per m². 12.5 cm: 8 per m². 14.5 cm: 7 per m². 15 cm: 7 per m². 20 cm: 5 per m². These figures exclude gaps.
Running metres (lm) is the total length of boards measured in metres. 7 boards of 3 metres = 21 running metres. It's a practical unit for ordering timber, as prices are often quoted per running metre.
For decking, 14.5 cm is standard. For cladding, 12.5-15 cm is common. For flooring, 10-15 cm depending on style. Wider boards give a modern rustic look, narrow boards a classic look.
