Calculate gravel for your garden

Our gravel calculator helps you determine the right amount of gravel for driveways, paths, drainage layers and paving bases. Gravel is one of the most widely used materials in landscaping and construction.

Gravel types and uses

Gravel comes in many grain sizes: fine (2-8 mm) for paths and decorative use, medium (8-16 mm) for driveways and drainage, and coarse (16-32 mm) for foundations and base layers. Pea gravel with round stones is used for paths and beds, while angular crushed stone is used for bases.

Driveway base

A gravel driveway typically needs 5-10 cm of gravel on top of a base layer of stable gravel (10-20 cm). For cars, 5 cm topping is sufficient, while heavy traffic needs 8-10 cm.

Delivery and pricing

Gravel is sold in 25 kg bags, bulk bags (about 1,000 kg) or loose delivery by truck. Loose delivery is by far the cheapest for larger quantities. One cubic metre of gravel weighs about 1,600 kg and typically costs 200-500 DKK depending on type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does gravel weigh per cubic metre?

Gravel typically weighs about 1,600 kg per cubic metre (1.6 tonnes). Weight can vary from 1,400-1,800 kg/mยณ depending on grain size, stone type and moisture. Fine gravel is lighter than coarse. A bulk bag typically contains about 1,000 kg, equivalent to about 0.6 mยณ.

How thick a layer of gravel do you need for a driveway?

A gravel driveway typically requires a base layer of 10-20 cm of stable crushed stone and a top layer of 5-10 cm of decorative gravel. Total thickness is 15-30 cm depending on the subsoil. Firm sandy ground needs less, while soft clay requires a thicker base.

Is it cheaper to buy gravel in bulk bags or regular bags?

Bulk bags are significantly cheaper than 25 kg bags. A bulk bag (about 1,000 kg) typically costs 300-600 DKK, while 40 bags of 25 kg (= 1,000 kg) can cost 1,200-2,000 DKK. For needs over 500 kg, bulk bags or loose delivery are recommended. Loose truck delivery is cheapest for quantities over 2-3 tonnes.
