Calculate hedge length from number of plants

Already bought your hedge plants and want to know how long a hedge you can create? Our calculator gives you the answer instantly. Enter the number of plants and desired spacing to get the total hedge length in metres.

How the length is calculated

The hedge length is calculated by multiplying the number of gaps (number of plants minus 1) by the plant spacing. For example, 25 plants at 40 cm spacing gives a hedge of 9.6 metres. The first and last plants mark the hedge endpoints.

Optimising plant spacing

If you have a specific area to cover, you can adjust the plant spacing. Closer spacing creates a dense hedge faster but covers a shorter distance. Wider spacing covers more but takes longer to form a dense hedge. Most hedge plants do well at 30-50 cm spacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the hedge length calculated?

Hedge length = (number of plants - 1) ร— plant spacing. We subtract 1 because the first plant starts at zero metres. Example: 25 plants at 40 cm spacing = 24 ร— 0.40 m = 9.6 metres of hedge.

Can you plant a hedge all year round?

Container plants can be planted almost all year round, except when the ground is frozen. Bare-root plants should be planted in October-November or early spring. Avoid planting in intense summer heat. Best results are achieved with spring or autumn planting.

What is the most popular hedge plant in Denmark?

Privet is the most popular hedge plant in Denmark. It is hardy, fast-growing and tolerates heavy pruning. Other popular choices are beech (green in summer, copper-coloured in winter), thuja (evergreen) and laurel hedge (evergreen with broad leaves).
