Calculate soil for your raised bed

Our raised bed calculator helps you find the right amount of soil and compost to fill your raised bed. A good raised bed is typically filled with 60% planting soil and 40% compost for optimal growing conditions.

The ideal soil mix

A raised bed should be filled with a blend of quality planting soil and compost. The 60/40 ratio provides nutrient-rich, well-drained soil ideal for vegetables and herbs. Compost adds nutrients and improves structure, while planting soil provides volume and stability.

Standard raised bed sizes

A typical raised bed is 200 cm long, 80 cm wide and 40 cm high. Width should not exceed 120 cm so you can reach the centre from both sides. Height should be at least 30 cm for sufficient root depth. For root vegetables like carrots and potatoes, at least 40 cm height is recommended.

Filling tips

Place a layer of twigs and branches at the bottom (about 10 cm) to improve drainage. Then a layer of compost and finally planting soil. Remember that soil settles about 10-15% after filling, so add a little extra. Water thoroughly after filling to help the soil settle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much soil does a raised bed need?

A standard raised bed of 200ร—80ร—40 cm requires about 640 litres of soil and compost. With the 60/40 split, that's about 384 litres of planting soil (10 bags of 40 L) and 256 litres of compost. Remember to add 10-15% extra as soil settles.

What is the ideal size for a raised bed?

An ideal raised bed is 120-200 cm long, 60-120 cm wide and 30-40 cm high. Width is most important โ€“ it shouldn't exceed 120 cm so you can reach the centre from both sides. For root vegetables, at least 40 cm height is recommended. Length can be adapted to the space.

Should you mix soil and compost in a raised bed?

Yes, a blend of 60% planting soil and 40% compost gives the best results. Compost adds nutrients and improves soil structure, while planting soil provides good drainage and stability. Mix the soil types thoroughly before filling for a uniform result.
