Calculate panels for walls and ceilings

Our panel calculator helps you determine running metres and boards for panelling work. Suitable for all panel types including tongue-and-groove, bead board and MDF panels.

Panel types

Common types include bead board (typically 12 cm wide), profile boards (10-15 cm), clapboard (15-20 cm) and MDF panels. Standard length is 3 metres.

Installation

Panels are mounted on battens (furring strips) at about 60 cm spacing. Boards can be nailed or clipped. Start from a corner and work systematically.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard panel width?

The most common panel width is 12 cm (bead board). Profile boards come in 10-15 cm widths. Clapboards are typically 15-20 cm wide. Visible width is slightly less than actual width due to tongue and groove.

How do I calculate running metres?

Divide the total wall area (mยฒ) by the panel width (in metres). E.g. 20 mยฒ / 0.12 m = 167 running metres. Add 5-10% extra for waste.

How long is a standard panel board?

Standard panel board length is 3 metres. Also available in 2.4 m, 3.6 m and 4.2 m. Choose length based on room height or wall width to minimise waste.
