Calculate number of plants from spacing
Our plant spacing calculator helps you determine how many plants to buy to cover a specific area. Enter the area size and desired spacing between plants, and the calculator gives you the total number of plants and density per m².
Typical plant spacing
Plant spacing depends on the plant type and size. Ground cover plants are typically planted 20-30 cm apart, perennials 30-50 cm, and shrubs 80-150 cm. Vegetables vary widely – lettuce at 25-30 cm, tomatoes at 50-60 cm, and potatoes at 30-40 cm.
Grid planting
The calculator assumes a grid pattern where plants are placed in rows with equal spacing in both directions. Staggered planting (zigzag) can fit about 15% more plants per m² but requires more planning. Grid planting is the most common method for beds and vegetable gardens.
Planting tips
Always measure the area and mark planting positions before you start. Use a measuring stick or string to ensure uniform spacing. Buy 5-10% extra plants as reserves. Remember to water thoroughly after planting.
