Calculate paint for your project

Our paint calculator helps you determine how many litres of paint to buy for your next painting project. The calculator accounts for area, number of coats and paint coverage, so you avoid buying too much or too little.

Coverage and paint type

Coverage varies depending on the paint type. Gloss and lacquer paints typically cover 10-12 m² per litre, while wall paint (matte/semi-matte) covers 8-12 m² per litre. Ceiling paint often has lower coverage at 6-8 m² per litre. Primer typically covers 8-10 m² per litre. Always check the manufacturer's specification on the tin.

Number of coats

Most painting projects require 2 coats of paint for an even and durable result. When changing from a dark to a light colour, 3 coats may be needed. Primer counts as a separate coat. When painting on newly plastered or new plasterboard, a primer is always recommended first.

How to calculate the area

Measure the wall's width and height, and multiply them to get the area in m². Remember to subtract windows and doors – a standard door is about 1.8 m² and a standard window about 1.5 m². For rooms with multiple walls, add the areas together. Most Danish rooms have a ceiling height of 2.5 m.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many litres of paint do I need per m²?

It depends on the paint's coverage. Standard wall paint typically covers 8-12 m² per litre. With a coverage of 10 m²/litre and 2 coats, you need about 0.2 litres per m². For a room with 40 m² of wall surface, that equals about 8 litres of paint.

Do I always need to apply 2 coats?

Generally yes. Two coats provide the best coverage and durability. When painting the same colour over an existing well-covered surface, one coat can sometimes be enough. When changing from a dark to a light colour, expect to need 3 coats.

What is the difference in coverage between different paint types?

Wall paint (matte/semi-matte) typically covers 8-12 m²/litre. Gloss paint and lacquers cover 10-12 m²/litre. Ceiling paint covers 6-8 m²/litre. Primer covers 8-10 m²/litre. Specialty paints like chalkboard or magnetic paint may have lower coverage.
